Warning: Contains spoilers for Web of Spider-Man #1!Spider-Man 2099 and Madame Web are trying to build a Spider-Society; they just need to decide which Spider-people get to join. This isn’t the first Spider-Society to exist within Marvel Comics; however, this is the first time Marvel has shown the formation of one from the beginning. As a result, Marvel is showing how they’re building their team and considering candidates.
Web of Spider-Man #1’s short story, “Spider-Society” by Alex Segura, Salvador Larroca, Guru-eFX, showcases Spider-Man 2099 and Madame Web in the beginning stages of building their new hero team. Together, these two are the perfect candidates to build a team of arachnid heroes.

Miguel has left his universe, Earth-928, multiple times in other comics. Plus, being from the future, he knows more about the heroes of Earth-616. Whereas Spider-Man 2099 is from the future, Madame Web can see the future. She may not perfectly predict every scenario, but she can try to help calculate various eventualities.

With superhero culture reeling in the grips of oversaturation, it might be time for a return to the roots of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s Spider-Man.
Spider-Man 2099 Names Potential Candidates for the New Spider-Society
Miguel O’Hara only lists two candidates he’d allow on the team before being interrupted. His first choice is Araña aka Anya Corazon. Part of Earth-616’s original Spider-Society, she’s an excellent choice. Spider-Man 2099 mentions her bravery and focus. Plus, on top of the typical spider powers, she has the ability to blend into shadows. Miguel’s next candidate is Spider-Woman. He says exactly why he wants her, calling her, “A legend. Part hero, party spy. She can make the tough calls and isn’t scared of sacrifice.” Furthermore, his comments about her reveal Miguel’s real criteria for the team. He says Spider-Woman makes him look soft. This makes sense with Spider-Man 2099’s origin and personality; he can be brutal.
Madame Web Has Her Own List of Candidates
Earlier in the issue, there is a list of Spider-people behind Miguel and Madame Web. It’s implied that these are additional candidates. Peter Parker is an obvious choice as the first Spider-Man. That being said, Peter hasn’t always had the best relationship with Miguel. Spider-Woman aka Gwen Stacey or Ghost-Spider, is another candidate up for consideration. Despite only being in the background in this scene, she’ll likely be added to the team. This is foreshadowed by Miguel seeing a hallucination of Spider-Ham. Occasionally in the comics, this same hallucination of Spider-Ham serves as Gwen’s inner monologue.

Speaking of Spider-Ham, Miguel confirms he is up for consideration by Madame Web. However, Spider-Man 2099 also confirms he’d never consider Spider-Ham. Hopefully, the hero will still get his chance to shine. Next, Web-Weaver is on the list. Web-Weaver is a newer Marvel character, and he’s the first openly-gay Spider-Man variation. In his universe, Web-Weaver aka Cooper Coen saved Peter Parker from being bitten by the radioactive spider and was bitten instead. Due to the fact they would’ve been bitten by the same spider, Cooper has many of the same powers as Peter Parker. Though, he does name his Spider-Sense “web sense.“
While there are other Spider-people already in consideration, one strong candidate is missing. Specifically, Silk would be a great addition to the roster. Not only does she also have all the usual spider abilities, but she has unique powers that set her apart. Similar to Miguel, Silk has claws. Due to her being bit by the same spider as Peter Parker, she can track him through the multiverse. Theoretically, this power may also extend to Web-Weaver. Regardless of who else is added to the new Spider-Society roster, Spider-Mann 2099 and Madame Web clearly have different standards, which should help build a diverse team.
