Seven Seas Licenses Long-Anticipated Manga Series – Comics Worth Reading

Long ago (2009), I wrote about Yokohama Shopping Trip (Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou). It was a scanted manga series where “sometime in the future, the world (or maybe just Japan) flooded. Fewer people live in smaller villages as a result, leading to a return to the simple life. The story follows Alpha, a robot (although you wouldn’t know it to look at her) who owns a coffee shop with almost no customers.”

It’s a charming slice-of-life series that I adored because it was so calm and relaxing. Now comes news that Seven Seas will be translating and releasing the series in “oversized omnibus editions” beginning in August. Finally! I’m thrilled to hear it. As they describe the series,

Set hundreds of years in the future after an environmental catastrophe, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (also known as Yokohama Shopping Log) centers on the simple life of Alpha, an android who runs a small coffee shop in coastal Japan. Alpha stands witness to chronicle the end of humanity’s days with coffee, a slice of watermelon, and the sound of her moon guitar backed by distant seagulls. Quiet and bittersweet, this tale is about the melancholy beauty that can be found even as the end approaches.

The series ran for 14 volumes originally; Seven Seas will collect them as five volumes at $24.99 US. I’ll be buying them!
