Peter Rabbit 3 News & Updates: Everything We Know

Following two family-friendly adventures that brought the beloved rabbit to life, Peter Rabbit 3 updates have been relatively scarce. Based on Beatrix Potter’s series of children’s books, the first Peter Rabbit movie was released in 2018 to strong box office and warm reviews. The sequel was released in 2021 to a more mixed response and earning nearly half of the original’s total gross. Peter Rabbit, directed by Will Gluck, follows the eponymous troublemaking rabbit, voiced by James Corden, and his family of animals (including voices of Elizabeth Debicki and Margot Robbie) and humans Bea and Thomas McGregor (Rose Byrne and Domnhall Gleeson). The mixed family travels to London to discuss Bea’s book deal with a publisher, and Peter gets mixed up in some hijinks along the way.

Though there seems to be plenty of room for the franchise to grow from here, fans are still waiting to hear any real news on a third entry. The more disappointing reception of Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway could point to the slow development of a new movie. The 2021 animated sequel fell short of the original and might indicate that audiences and critics don’t have as much interest in seeing this franchise go on as the filmmakers thought. However, with a recognizable name and the popularity of the first movie, Peter Rabbit 3 updates could be on the way at any time.

Peter Rabbit 3 Latest News

Peter Rabbit 3 updates have been lacking since the release of Peter Rabbit 2. As that movie was getting ready to be released, there seemed to be plenty of confidence in seeing the franchise continue. Director and writer Will Gluck expressed (via EW) that there were still plenty more stories that could be told and pointed to the work of Beatrix Potter as providing plenty of material to continue on. Though Gluck also was aware the continuation depended on how the sequel was received. That was back in 2021 before the movie underperformed at the box office. It is safe to say that confidence in the franchise is less secure now.

Peter Rabbit 2 Is Unconfirmed

With no new Peter Rabbit 2 updates, the movie remains unofficial at this time. Looking at the production of the previous movie, Peter Rabbit 2 was announced in 2018, a few months after the first movie was released in theaters. Obviously, as it has now been two years since the sequel was released Peter Rabbit 3 is not being fast-tracked in the same way, if it is even happening at all.

There’s no confirmation yet that Peter Rabbit 3 will go into production. Had the movie followed the same production timeline as Peter Rabbit 2, fans could have expected to see it in mid-2023 which is obviously not the case. With the animated aspects mixed with the live-action, if the sequel was announced now to be in production, it would likely be another two years before it was released so fans should not hold out much hope of seeing Peter Rabbit 3 any time soon.

Peter Rabbit 3 Cast

As a direct sequel to Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway, it would be reasonable to assume that the studio and director would attempt to reunite the main cast for subsequent outings. However, with the cast also includes some actors who have become huge stars in the meantime, with Margot Robbie’s movie career being the most impressive in the cast. There’s no confirmation of returning or new cast and characters for Peter Rabbit 3, but if the main cast were to return, that would include the voice cast of James Corden voicing Peter Rabbit, Robbie as Flopsy, Elizabeth Debicki as Mopsy, Daisy Ridley as Cottontail, and the main live cast members Rose Byrne as Bea McGregor and Domnhall Gleeson as Thomas McGregor.

Peter Rabbit 3 Possible Story

While the creator of Peter Rabbit and his friends, Beatrix Potter, wrote a series of 23 books about the characters, the movies don’t rely so much on those original stories. They instead modernize the settings and actions of the characters, which are drawn from the books. A third movie would likely have Peter experiencing further hijinks in a modern setting. In an interview with Stefan Pape of HeyUGuys, director Will Gluck said:

“Peter Rabbit 3, I’ve almost finished writing it. The idea is bananas. It’s really hard to do a sequel and I think it’s harder to do a third one but I think we have the advantage of the meta nature of ours. So the opening scene of the third movie is absolutely crazy.”

Gluck also compared the character of Peter Rabbit in each of the two released movies and his plans for a third, saying that Peter is a teenager who is flawed, and, “If there is a third movie, he’s going to be even more flawed, because as we get older, as we all know, we get more and more flawed. We don’t go the other way.

With no Peter Rabbit 3 updates even hinting at whether the movie is going to happen, there is now news on if a trailer will ever be seen. It is possible there could be a teaser announcement trailer if production on the sequel does happen, but in terms of seeing actual footage of Peter Rabbit 3, fans will have to wait until there is so official word and filming at least starts for the new movie.
