Jake Gyllenhaal’s Road House 2 receives a cautious update from director Doug Liman, though he would “hate to leave him hanging.” A remake of 1989’s Road House, the new film follows an ex-UFC fighter who takes a job as a bouncer at a Florida Keys roadhouse and discovers the apparent paradise is not at all what it seems. Other than Gyllenhaal in the lead role as Elwood Dalton, the Road House remake’s cast includes Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen, Jessica Williams, Joaquim de Almeida, J.D. Pardo, Post Malone, and Conor McGregor.

During a recent interview with Collider promoting The Instigators, Liman provided a cautious update on Gyllenhaal’s Road House 2. The director expressed mixed emotions, sharing both his fondness for Gyllenhaal but also his general reservations about sequels, though he would “hate to leave him hanging.” Read his full comments below:

I don’t know. I mean, Jake’s a good friend. I love him dearly. Yeah, it was a really special collaboration to pull off that character. It’s not the kind of character Jake normally plays, so I hate to leave him hanging. But also, I’ve never done a sequel and you know, not that I don’t talk about it because obviously Edge of Tomorrow. You know? It’s not a day goes by I don’t think about how we can pull that off.

What’s The Status Of Road House 2?

It’s Been Confirmed With Jake Gyllenhaal Returning

Sent straight to streaming on Prime Video in March, which Liman publicly criticized, the Road House remake was a commercial success, attracting more than 50 million viewers worldwide in its first two weekends, and a total of 80 million viewers as of May. However, Road House reviews were mixed, praising the remake’s ability to bring the cult classic into the modern era while delightfully maintaining the original’s focus on lighthearted action rather than intricate storytelling, resulting in a 59% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences shared similar sentiments, earning a 53% audience score.

Around the time the remake was released on Prime Video, Gyllenhaal expressed interest in reprising his role in a sequel. By May, a Road House sequel was officially announced with Gyllenhaal returning as Elwood Dalton. Liman’s return, however, hasn’t been confirmed and when asked about the possibility of him returning for the announced sequel, which Gyllenhaal is already committed to, Liman shared some mixed emotions, expressing his fondness for Gyllenhaal but also his reservations about sequels.

Liman – known for directing Swingers, The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Edge of Tomorrow, and American Made – has never made a sequel throughout his career. However, Edge of Tomorrow 2, as Liman mentions, has become a serious possibility in addition to Road House 2. Seemingly, Liman remains undecided about directing Road House 2 despite Gyllenhaal’s eagerness to return to the role.
