On Wednesday, I walked my youngest to school for his first day of first grade. If he had the jitters, he hid them well and quickly left my side to find his buddies. The first grade teachers came out to greet the children, three out of the four in their twenties and plenty beautiful (thank God they teach the youngins and not my middle school boy as learning would be optional). I noticed all the sensible comfort shoes on the playground that morning–moms getting ready to go for a walk or jog, Birkenstocks for grocery shopping, polished Danskos for retail jobs and then SHE tottered by. The newest and youngest first grade teacher-beauty wearing three-inch high slingbacks. I panicked, thoughts racing around my head, “How will she ever make it through the day in THOSE? What if she trips on an eraser or small child? Maybe not today, tomorrow or even this year, but someday she’ll need the Barking Dog.
