Art Basel Miami BeachDecember 4-7, 2014

It’s that wonderful time of the year when Art Basel Miami Beach is getting ready to open. It runs December 4 -7 and is one of the biggest and best art fairs in the world. Because of it, Miami and Miami Beach have become major art world destinations. Last year 75,000 visitors attended the fair,

The fair takes place at the very large Miami Beach Convention Center. It’s a big fair but broken down into nine smaller Sectors with visitor guides for each. Be sure to look for the Sector guides and other information when entering the fair.

The Sectors are:

Galleries: The largest sector with more than 200 of the world’s leading Modern and contemporary art galleries – from North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia. They display paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, prints, photography, film, video, and digital art by over 4,000 artists. The galleries are juried into the fair.

Nova: Designed for galleries to present one, two or three artists showing new works that have been created within the last three years, the Nova sector often features never-before-seen pieces fresh from the artist’s studio and strong juxtapositions.

Positions: This sector allows curators, critics, and collectors to discover ambitious new talents from all over the globe by providing a platform for a single artist to present one major project.

Edition: Leading publishers of editioned works, prints, and multiples exhibit the results of their collaboration with renowned artists.

Kabinett: Participants are chosen from the Galleries sector to present curated exhibitions in a separately delineated space within their booths. The curatorial concepts for Kabinett are diverse, including thematic group exhibitions, art-historical showcases, and solo shows.

Public: This sector offers its visitors a chance to see outdoor sculptures, interventions, and performances, sited within an open and public exhibition space at Collins Park (2100 Collins AVE) near the beach. The sector is produced in collaboration with the Bass Museum of Art. The Public opening night event is December 3rd, from 8:30 – 10:00pm.

Film: The Film sector presents a dynamic program of films by and about artists. Screenings take place inside the Convention Center, and in the outdoor setting of SoundScape Park where works are shown on the 7,000-square-foot outdoor projection wall of the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center. Organized in association with David Gryn, Director of London’s Artprojx. In addition, Zurich film connoisseur This Brunner selects a feature length film for a special screening at the Colony Theatre.

Survey: Survey presents precise art historical projects that may include solo presentations by an individual artist, or juxtapositions and thematic exhibits from artists representing a range of cultures, generations, and artistic approaches. For 2014, you’ll find displays on: Ralston Crawford, Henry Darger, Poul Gernes, Tetsuya Ishida, Lydia Okumura, Lotty Rosenfeld, Michelle Stuart, Taller Torres-García and Alfredo Volpi, plus others.

Magazines: Art publications from around the world display their magazines in single-magazine stands or the collective booth. Editors and publishers are often present at the show. Great for finding current and past issues of magazines.
