Pupposites Attract by Hono Natsuna bills itself as “a fluffy, feel-good romance”, which it is, and that’s just the kind of light-hearted read I wanted. The “fluffy” is relevant in more ways than one, as the meet-cute happens due to a couple of dogs, ones that demonstrate the perception that “opposites attract” with pets and their owners.
Tsubu-chan is a big, scary-looking Rottweiler owned by Chiharu, a petite woman (but with an inner strength that matches her pet, who’s really a little bit of a scaredy cat). Monjuro is a cutely hyper Pomeranian owned by Kiyotaka, a large but shy and self-sacrificing man.
When they meet, thanks to their pets, Chiharu shows she’s able to take the lead, while Kiyotaka tends to give in to his adorable pup. They go to a dog cafe, meet buying pet food, and gradually get to know each other.
The chapters are short and sweet, which keeps the reading brisk, which I liked. Sometimes I want something that moves along more quickly than the emotion-laden schoolgirl or office woman romance that’s more commonly seen.
Occasionally we get the dogs’ points of view, which I loved. As the book continues, we meet family members and learn the characters’ occupations. This looks to be a slow burn, with the leads knowing less of what’s bound to happen than the supporting cast does, but so long as we keep getting cute pet images, I’m all for it.
