Although Nika’s powers have helped Luffy plow through any obstacles in his way thus far, One Piece‘s unexpected upcoming battle proves Gear Five alone may not be enough for Luffy to become the Pirate King. The battle on Egghead has finally forced Luffy to get serious; however, the latest chapter hints his next opponents may be more than he can handle even with Gear Five, as the rest of the Five Elders descend from the Red Line for what may be the first time in the history of One Piece.
Chapter #1109 of One Piece reveals Saint Saturn has summoned the rest of the Five Elders to Egghead in an attempt to get the situation on the island back under control. More importantly, although Kizaru is out of the picture, Saturn is still not taking damage from Luffy’s attacks in Gear Five, which could spell disaster for Luffy if this happens to be the case with the rest of the Five Elders as well.
As powerful as Gear Five may be, it still has its shortcomings and Luffy’s inability to deal damage to Saturn proves Gear Five might not be the last of Luffy’s powerups in the series. The impending battle against the Five Elders could prove to be the catalyst that pushes Luffy to get even stronger or unlock more of Gear Five’s hidden potential.

Luffy’s Next Battle Against the Five Elders May Prove Troublesome

Although Gear Five was powerful enough to defeat Kaido, even its ridiculous powers could fall short in front of the full might of the Five Elders. As hinted in chapter #1085, the rest of the Five Elders appear to possess powerful devil fruits just like Saint Saturn, if not even stronger ones. Saturn not only possesses incredible regeneration but also durability and strength. Worst of all, even Haki appears to be useless against him, making him impervious to damage.
Saturn was unfazed even after being completely flattened and tossed across the island in the latest chapter.
Luffy would have had his hands full dealing with Saturn alone so having to fight all the Five Elders at once may be impossible even with Gear Five. Moreover, the summoning Saturn performs creates magic circles similar to the one Saturn appeared from on Egghead, suggesting it may be the same ability. If so, the rest of the Five Elders will arrive at Egghead in not too long, leaving Luffy unable to avoid the confrontation.
Luffy Has Yet to Perfect Gear Five
One of Gear Five’s biggest weaknesses at present is its time limit and its debilitating after-effects. In that sense, Gear Five isn’t much different from Luffy’s previous Gears. While the Five Elders will surely be tough opponents, taking them down is not entirely impossible. That is, if Luffy can pinpoint their weaknesses and figure out how to deal damage to them in time. A key factor at play here is whether Luffy can do so before his stamina wears out, as Luffy will certainly be at a disadvantage in a drawn-out battle.
Luffy will lose if the fight against the Five Elders becomes a battle of endurance.
That said, perhaps the impossible battle at Egghead will take Luffy’s abilities to the next level. The Nika Fruit only recently awakened, so it makes sense that Luffy may need time to unlock its full potential or at least become more efficient at using Gear Five. As threatening as the Five Elders may be, far worse opponents await Luffy in the New World. Either way, the Five Elders’ arrival at Egghead has kicked One Piece‘s Final Saga into top gear and is likely only the first of many shocking developments to come.
