The SAT test will go completely digital in the year 2024. Students will use laptops instead of pencils and paper forms to complete the tests. The digital tests will be accessed online.
The SAT is administered by The College Board and has been a popular college-entrance exam used to evaluate students. However, according to a USA Today story its use has been fading in recent years. The story cites the National Center for Fair & Open Testing for data saying 80% of 2,300 four-year colleges aren’t requiring high schools students to take the exam in 2022.
A press release from College Board says the digital SAT will be about an hour shorter. It will take about two hours instead of three and students will get more time per question. It will also have shorter reading passages. Test scores will also be available much sooner with the digital version.
Priscilla Rodriguez, vice president of College Readiness Assessments at College Board, says in a statement, “The digital SAT will be easier to take, easier to give, and more relevant. W’re not simply putting the current SAT on a digital platform-we’re taking full advantage of what delivering an assessment digitally makes possible. With input from educators and students, we are adapting to ensure we continue to meet their evolving needs.”
Students will need a laptop or tablet to take the digital test. The College Board says students can use their own device or a school issued device. The College Board says devices will be provided on test day to help address potential inequities in access to technology.
