Gmorning, Gnight!: Little Pep Talks for Me & You – Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jonny Sun (Illustrator)

Summary:

Good morning. Do not get stuck
in the comments section of life today.
Make, do, create the things.
Let others tussle it out. Vamos!

Before he inspired the world with Hamilton and was catapulted to international fame, Lin-Manuel Miranda was inspiring his Twitter followers with words of encouragement at the beginning and end of each day. He wrote these original sayings, aphorisms, and poetry for himself as much as for others. But as Miranda’s audience grew, these messages took on a life on their own. Now, Miranda has gathered the best of his daily greetings into a beautiful collection illustrated by acclaimed artist (and fellow Twitter favorite) Jonny Sun. Full of comfort and motivation, Gmorning, Gnight! is a touchstone for anyone who needs a quick lift.

My Review: Are you a fan of Disney ‘s Encanto and Moana or Broadway’s In the Heights or Hamilton? If so, then you’re already familiar with the musical genius that is Lin-Manuel Miranda, award-winning lyricist, actor, and composer. But did you know he’s also the author of Gmorning, Gnight!: Little Pep Talks for Me & You?
Gmorning, Gnight! is a collection of Miranda’s tweets published in 2018, three years after the successful debut of Hamilton and 10 years after In the Heights.  The tweets were posted daily, one in the morning and another in the evening, generally connected in some way. Here’s an example of one of his daily sets (and my fave):
Gmorning
In your corner,
even in the roundest of rooms.
On your side,
even if it makes this seesaw kind of boring.
Gnight.
Holding your hand,
even if it’s sticky from jelly or honey.
On your team,
even when you’re playing solitaire.
Here’s another (because I couldn’t pick just one):
Good morning!
Good morning!
Let’s make some new mistakes!
Let’s find the things worth saving in the mess our
living makes!
Good night!
Good night!
Let’s make some new mistakes!
Let’s stumble toward success and pack some snacks
for little breaks!

Gmorning, Gnight! came out pre-pandemic, but is oddly on point, and filled with encouraging words and uplifting advice. I love the concept of connected tweets and was always interested to see how Miranda would link them together. Some of them really resonated and others were simply nice to hear, but I think that each reader will find a gem that speaks to them. Miranda’s tweets are also perfectly paired with the spare, Shel-Silverstein-esque illustrations of Jonny Sun (see above right).

I read Gmorning, Gnight! in one sitting, but I think it would be best left on a nightstand and read in short bursts (as it was intended to be consumed on Twitter). It would make a lovely gift for die-hard fans or anyone in need of a easy-to-read pick-me-up.
My Rating: 3.75 Stars
For the Sensitive Reader: Approximately ten instances of profanity. Several, but not all of them, are bl*cked.
