Comfortable Shoes for Teachers | Round One

On Wednesday, I walked my youngest to school for his first day of first grade. If he had the jitters, he hid them well and quickly left my side to find his buddies. The first grade teachers came out to greet the children, three out of the four in their twenties and plenty beautiful (thank God they teach the youngins and not my middle school boy as learning would be optional). This does get to shoes…

I noticed all the sensible comfort shoes on the playground that morning–moms getting ready to go for a walk or jog, Birkenstocks for grocery shopping, polished Danskos for retail jobs and then SHE tottered by. The newest and youngest first grade teacher-beauty wearing three-inch high slingbacks.  I panicked, thoughts racing around my head, “How will she ever make it through the day in THOSE? What if she trips on an eraser or small child? What if she twists an ankle en route to the library with 23 cherubs watching her limp in pain?” And then, “What about her foot future–bunions, fallen arches…and no, not plantar fasciiitis…?”

Maybe not today, tomorrow or even this year, but someday she’ll need the Barking Dog. And when she does, I’ll hopefully still be around making my recommendations and writing my reviews on stylish, comfortable shoes for ALL women. But today I dedicate this post to teachers. I used to be one; on my feet from 8:30-4:00 Monday through Friday. A diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis in my late 20s put my barking dogs in a darling pair of Dansko mary janes. And we’ll get to the new fall Danskos very soon, but let’s take a look at a brand not as well-known, but certainly as or perhaps more comfortable! Dromedaris from Portugal: adorable, well-made and full of comfort technologies.

Pippa and Patsy. Two perky flats; one a lace-up, the other a buckle-down. Both feature naturally tanned soft leather uppers and a removable footbed with what the Dromedaris company call “3-D Technology.” The footbed is made of three layers:

1. The forefoot is made of soft cushion to cradle your foot with each step.

2. The arch has lateral stability and arch support to keep your foot supported and in the right position.

3. The heel has anti-shock properties to absorb the impact of walking.

A pump with a one-inch heel is hard to find, but the Tia’s got it! She also features a roomy toe box, adjustable velcro instep strap and 3-D Technology like the shoes featured above. $149.95 at Shoebuy, free shipping and returns.

Middle school teachers, you will love the Kara and so will your students! They’re Frye look-alikes with more comfort (rocker sole, good support, soft faux shearling lining) and a lower price tag. $164.95 at Shoebuy, free shipping and returns.
 Dromedaris kai
Kai is the shoe version of the Kara with strechy elastic for easy on and off. $144.95 at Shoebuy, free shipping and returns.
Dromedaris hornbill
The Dromedaris Hornbill looks vaguely familiar, doesn’t it? If you recall, Dansko put out a line of shoes a few years ago with a similar rocker outsole. The Hornbill features a removable insole and can accommodate an orthotic. One reviewer at Shoebuy highly recommends the Hornbill for hallux rigidus (arthritis/pain in big toe). Good to know. $139.95 at Shoebuy

Since there aren’t that many online retailers in the US for Dromedaris, try their shop locator to see if they might be in a store near you.
