Nick Cave Monday #50: “As I Sat Sadly By Her Side”

Earth is a bleak planet and the majority of humanity is selfish, each following the compulsion of their id.

All you need to do is look out the window to be disgusted at the theater of the human race.

Yet, leave it to Nick to create a beautiful, romantic ballad to capture the essence of our world of shit.

Ah the optimistic woman. Both a blessing and a curse. She sees the beauty of the world. Yet the man witnesses the cesspool of degenerate creatures. She explains to him that he needs to let go of that, God doesn’t care for his judgements. Her optimism becomes sorrow. The man smiles.

Single white melancholic male looking for single upbeat female for cuddling and engaging conversation. Must have a kitty cat.

Here is the official video for the song:

Here’s a video clip of The Bad Seeds recording the song in the studio. I love watching this extra credit because it’s like you’re hanging out in the studio with them. Awe, and footage of Nick’s son Luke hanging out during the recording session.

I’m glad you asked, here’s another stellar live version:

Extra credit “God is in The House”:

A utopian city where God is in the house. Everyone is on their best behavior, yet God never comes out of his house…..so is he really there or are the residents just making up this fairy tale of God actually being there.

Kind of makes ya think of a parallel with the majority of the population of this planet.

“God is in the house, oh I wish he would come out.”

The lesson we learn today is that our sorrow can be contagious no matter how positive our ladies are. And these wonderful ladies snap us out of these states and we can lay our heads on their laps and take comfort.

“God has given you but one heart
You are not a home for the hearts of your brothers
And God does not care for you benevolence
Anymore than he cares for the lack of it in others

Nor does he care for you to sit
At windows in judgment of the world He created
While sorrows pile up around you
Ugly, useless and overinflated.”

Thanks for reading, and come back next week for another edition of Nick Cave Monday.

There are two Nick Cave Mondays left.
